Game bird habitat development funds available for landowners
Private landowners looking to improve wildlife habitat on their property may qualify for financial assistance through the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife, particularly if they want to benefit bobwhite quail and ring-neck pheasants.
Bobwhite quail and ring-neck pheasant are prized game birds. However, populations of both have suffered from permanent habitat loss or lack of maintenance on existing habitat.
“It used to be that farming practices created and maintained a lot of the habitat that quail and pheasants needed,” said Gary Langell, private lands program manager for DNR Fish & Wildlife. “More ground was typically disturbed each year than what was planted and harvested. Many of those disturbed areas would remain idle for two or three years in a row before being disked up again and provided ideal nesting and winter cover. Ladies and Gentlemen,
For your information we will be starting an Indiana Conservation Officer Recruit School next month. We are anxious to get these new Officers properly trained and in their County assignments. While we have reduced the time frame for that to become a reality it is still a very timely endeavor, taking approximately six months to complete the various training phases.
We will be starting another hiring process shortly after this one starts. That process will include tests, physicals, swim test, background investigations, interviews, and polygraphs.
My reason for contacting this group is to ask for your assistance as we search for qualified candidates to join our ranks now and into the future. Public hearings scheduled for proposed fish & wildlife rule changes
The Indiana Natural Resources Commission will host two hearings in June to seek public comment on proposed changes to a number of fish and wildlife rules.
The hearings will be Monday, June 10, at Mounds State Park in Anderson and Thursday, June 13, at Spring Mill Inn in Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell. Both hearings will start at 6 p.m. EDT.
Proposed rule changes for discussion include:
— Requiring hunter orange on ground blinds used during the day when hunting any species for which the hunter is required to wear hunter orange.
— Allowing the use of the draw-loc device when deer hunting.
— Adding a new primitive muzzleloader season.
— Adding 15 days to the deer archery season without crossbows.
— Changing the north and south zones and season dates for quail hunting.

Canned hunting to be legalized |

Matt Ubelhor, Don Lehe, Sean Eberhart maybe more are going to amend Brent Steele's SB 487 to include legalization of Canned Hunting. I am sure Steele will accept the amendment to his bill. He's not with us.
It seem the new Governor is on board with this, the Lt. Governor as well as she voted for it last time. People need to call his office. So the DNR will not do anything.
I would suggest if hunters care about their sport and their deer herd they contact their house reps now as well as the media and get the word out on social media as well. We have had TB in a couple of captive herds, wild deer shot by sharpshoters as a precation. We have had escaped deer get loose including one from the captive herd in PA that tested positive. So sportsmen it's in you hands not the DNR. They work for Governor Pence not you.
